By Photo’s Matt Cottom
Characterized by its close-focusing capabilities and apochromatic design, the Canon EF-mount Laowa 100mm f/2.8 2X Ultra Macro APO from Venus Optics is a unique and versatile short-telephoto prime. Featuring a pair of low dispersion elements, color fringing and chromatic aberrations have been virtually eliminated throughout the focusing range in order to achieve high clarity and color accuracy. The lens has a manual focus design to suit its macro capabilities, which permit working with subjects as close as 2:1 with a minimum focusing distance of 9.7″.A 9-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.
Telephoto prime is designed for full-frame Canon EF-mount cameras, however can also be used with APS-C models where it will provide a 160mm equivalent focal length. Featuring an apochromatic designation, this lens uses a pair of low dispersion elements to effectively eliminate chromatic aberrations and color fringing for greater clarity and accurate rendering. Greater-than-life-size 2:1 maximum magnification pairs with a 9.7″ minimum focusing distance to suit working with close-up subjects. Manual focus design, along with focus distance and depth of field scales, aid in precise focusing control. A 9-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.

Fantastically Unique

I needed a macro lens to shoot product photos of fishing flies. I did a lot of research and this one stood far above the rest in its price range. I can get beautiful, crisp images with this lens – the price trade off comes in with the lack of auto-focus and image stabilization. This is no problem for my needs, but will be a hurdle for anyone who needs to be able to shoot without a tripod.
fantastic lens

fantastic lens
Definitely a good choice

I bought the lens a couple of weeks ago and have used it quite a bit now. Easy to use, although only manual focus works with a Nikon camera. I use the lens with a Nikon D850. Just add more studying and shooting objects, and I think the pictures will get even better. Absolute purchase recommendation.

Sharp images at a great price

I use this as a studio lens with a StackShot. Impressive images at the price point. A bit bulky and heavy so I will use a different lens for field work. A chip to communicate make, model, focal length and aperture would raise it to 5 stars.
WOW!

I have been looking for a macro lens that I could use for other than macro photography and the Venus Optics Laowa 100mm f2.8 2X Ultra Macro APO lens fits that bill perfectly. Again photo had the best lens I could have imagined at the right price. As a 100mm lens it is sharp and easy to use and as a macro it is unsurpassed. My use of this great lens has been limited as I was sidelined with serious heart surgery that i still am recovering but I did get to use it enough to know that I have exactly what I want thanks to Venus Optics and photo.
great

great
Amazing for DSLR scanning

Ultra sharp and detailed lens when used to digitize film. Scans won’t need sharpening if you’re using good glass to shoot film. The focus throw could be a bit longer specially at 2x macro, but it’s not a problem for scanning. It’s also a good telephoto for portraits.
